iPhone Water Resistance Ratings
Apple's IP (Ingress Protection) ratings indicate resistance to dust and water, but they come with important caveats. The rating is tested in controlled lab conditions with fresh, still water — not pool water (chlorine), ocean water (salt), or soapy water. Apple's warranty does not cover water damage regardless of the IP rating. Water resistance also degrades over time as the adhesive seals age.
Below is the exact IP rating and tested depth for every model.

What IP68 Actually Means
The "6" in IP68 means the device is fully dust-tight. The "8" indicates it can withstand continuous immersion in water beyond 1 meter — Apple tests at 6 meters for its newest models. IP67 devices are tested at 1 meter only.
Key limitations: Water resistance is not permanent. Drop damage, screen replacements, and normal aging of adhesive seals all reduce it. If you've ever had your iPhone repaired by a third party, assume the original water resistance is compromised. Apple's own repair process includes resealing, but third-party shops often don't.
Practical advice: Treat water resistance as accident insurance, not a feature invitation. Don't intentionally submerge your iPhone for underwater photos — use a waterproof case for that. But if your phone falls into a puddle, a sink, or even a shallow pool, an IP68-rated model will almost certainly survive.
