The Refurbished iPhone Buying Guide

"Refurbished" gets used loosely, so this guide is specific: what each grade actually looks like, how to compare models safely, and the five things to check before you pay.

What "refurbished" actually means
A refurbished iPhone is a previously owned phone — a return, a trade-in, or an open-box unit — that a professional refurbisher has inspected against a checklist, repaired if needed, cleaned, factory-reset, and graded by cosmetic condition. It is then resold with a warranty and a return window. That warranty and return policy are the line that separates "refurbished" from "used."
A used iPhone, by contrast, is sold as-is by a private seller. No testing, no warranty, no returns, and no guarantee the battery, screen, or Face ID actually work. Used can be cheaper, but you carry all the risk. Refurbished costs a little more and removes almost all of it — which is why, for most buyers, refurbished is the smarter way to save.
A refurbished iPhone can be a sensible alternative to a new unit when its condition, warranty, return policy, and battery terms meet your needs. The model's software support and features do not change with its cosmetic grade, but the seller's terms can.
Refurbished grades, decoded
Sellers use different names for the same four tiers. Here's the translation, and what each one actually looks like in the hand.
| Grade (common names) | What it looks like | Typical premium |
|---|---|---|
| Pristine / Like New / Premium | No visible marks at any angle. Often indistinguishable from new. | Check live Apple listings |
| Excellent / Very Good | Tiny marks only visible up close in good light. The value sweet spot. | Usually below Pristine; compare live listings |
| Good | Light, visible scratches on the frame or back; screen is clean. | Usually the lowest grade; compare live listings |
| Fair / Acceptable | Clearly visible wear, possible small dents. Fully functional. | Most visible wear — check photos |
What to pick: "Good" or "Excellent/Very Good" is where the value lives — light wear you'll cover with a case, for a real discount over Pristine. Only pay up for Pristine if a flawless screen matters to you. "Fair/Acceptable" saves the most but can have dents and deeper scratches, so always check the seller's actual photos and the return policy before buying that grade.

Where to buy a refurbished iPhone
Sources to compare by condition information, warranty, return terms, and current listing price.
Back Market — a marketplace to compare
A marketplace dedicated to refurbished tech. Review the current condition grade, warranty, return window, seller information, and listing price for the configuration you want before buying. Browse Back Market →
Apple Certified Refurbished — an option to compare
Apple Certified Refurbished stock is limited and terms can vary by model. Compare the current condition details, warranty, and price with other listings before deciding.
Amazon Renewed — most convenient
Renewed devices are tested by qualified suppliers and backed by the Amazon Renewed Guarantee (90-day returns/replacement). Fast Prime shipping and a familiar checkout. Grading is less granular than Back Market's, so read the specific listing's condition notes. Amazon Renewed →
Carrier & big-box refurb — situational
Carriers and some retailers sell certified pre-owned iPhones, occasionally with trade-in or plan deals attached. Fine if the bundle math works, but you're usually tied to that carrier and the standalone price is rarely the best. Compare against Back Market before committing.
Avoid: unbranded marketplace listings with no grade, no warranty, and no return policy. That's a used phone wearing the word "refurbished." If you can't see a grade and a return window, walk away.
5 things to check before you buy
- 1.Warranty length. Minimum 1 year from a marketplace like Back Market. No warranty means it isn't really refurbished.
- 2.Battery health. Reputable sellers guarantee at least 80–85% capacity, and Back Market lists it. Below 80%, expect a replacement or skip the listing.
- 3.Return window. 14–30 days lets you confirm Face ID, the cameras, and cellular all work. Test everything in the first few days.
- 4.Carrier unlock status. Buy unlocked unless you're certain it works on your network. "Unlocked" should be stated explicitly.
- 5.Genuine parts & clean IMEI. The grade should note genuine vs. aftermarket parts, and the device must not be blacklisted (lost/stolen) or carrier-locked to unpaid finance.

Refurbished iPhone FAQ
Are refurbished iPhones worth it?
For buyers who are comfortable with a prior-generation device or cosmetic wear, a certified refurbished iPhone can be worthwhile. It runs the same iOS as an equivalent new model and should include a clear warranty and return window. Check the battery policy, exact grade, and seller terms before ordering.
What's the difference between refurbished and used?
Used is sold as-is by a private seller: no testing, no warranty, no returns. Refurbished is professionally inspected, tested, graded, and sold with a warranty and a return window. Refurbished costs a little more and removes almost all the risk.
Do refurbished iPhones come with a warranty?
Yes from reputable sellers. Back Market and Amazon Renewed both include a warranty, and Apple Certified Refurbished includes the same 1-year warranty as new plus AppleCare+ eligibility. No warranty = a used phone, not a refurbished one.
What grade should I buy?
Good or Excellent/Very Good is the value sweet spot — light, hard-to-see wear for a real discount over Pristine. Pick Pristine only if a flawless screen matters; Fair/Acceptable saves most but can show visible scratches, so check photos and the return policy first.
Should I buy refurbished or trade in first?
If you plan to trade in, get a trade-in quote for your current iPhone and compare it with the condition, warranty, and return terms of the refurbished model you are considering. Time the two transactions around your own upgrade needs rather than assuming a fixed savings pattern.
