iPhone Biometrics Evolution
Last updated
From the click of a button to a glance at the screen. How Apple changed iPhone authentication and display design.
2013: Touch ID (iPhone 5s)
Apple introduced the fingerprint sensor integrated into the Home button. It set the standard for mobile security, allowing fast unlocking and App Store purchases.
2017: Face ID & The Notch (iPhone X)
The Home button was removed to make way for an edge-to-edge display. Face ID used 3D facial mapping for superior security (1 in 1,000,000 false match rate vs 1 in 50,000 for Touch ID).
2022: Dynamic Island (iPhone 14 Pro)
The static notch evolved into the interactive Dynamic Island. It combines hardware and software to show alerts, live activities, and media controls.
Touch ID vs Face ID Comparison
| Feature | Touch ID | Face ID |
|---|---|---|
| Security | 1 in 50,000 false match | 1 in 1,000,000 false match |
| Speed | Fast (requires touch) | Fast (requires glance) |
| Wet Fingers | Often fails | Works fine |
| Masks / Sunglasses | Works fine | Works with newer models (iPhone 12+) |
| Current Availability | iPhone SE only | All flagship models |
Touch ID on the Duo; Face ID on slab iPhones
The iPhone 18 Pro still uses Face ID and a Dynamic Island. The iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID, with an under-display camera on the inner screen. Rumors of under-display Face ID on slab Pro models have not arrived in 2026.
